DKnit Design ideas 3 - all-over patterns
Once you have an idea for a DesignaKnit stitch pattern, do experiment with different ways of using it. Animals, some plants and other objects can be used as motifs, but this time lets see how part of a picture can be used as an all-over pattern. This picture of a palm tree was one that I took in Costa Rica and I used it to create several different all-over patterns. |
Look near the top of the picture and you should be able to see where I cut this section of the pattern from. However, the lines were mainly horizontal - not ideal for Fair Isle because of float length, so it was rotated through 90 degrees. |

Using a pattern like the one above sometimes causes problems with repeats, which can be untidy at the edges. This pattern is a small aera of the one above, placed in the top left quarter. It was then flipped and placed on the right, mirrored and placed at the bottom left and mirrored and flipped and placed at the bottom right. |
Here is the same pattern but shown with more repeats. To add interest to it, the background colour was changed after each repeat of the pattern above.

This is my favourite - taken from the first small pattern. This was repeated three times and each repeat has a different contrast colour. There are many possible variations - strong colours for example give a completely different effect. The pattern repeats neatly - but you would never guess what inspired it! |
